Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Oceanside Police Chief Fred Armijo will retire on April 1 after 34 years of public safety service. Armijo started working as a lifeguard in 1989 after graduating from Oceanside High School. In 1993, he joined the Oceanside Police department, where he rose through the ranks to become chief. "I am very proud to have worked in the city I grew up in and am honored to have finished my career as Oceanside's Police Chief," said Armijo. The city is recruiting internally for Chief Armijo's replacement. (City of Oceanside)
- Camp Pendleton will welcome hundreds of wounded Marines and sailors from across the world for the Marine Corps Trials, a military adaptive sports invitational from February 28 to March 12. Athletes will compete in a variety of sports, including archery, cycling, swimming, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, rowing, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Competitors have an opportunity to represent the Marine Corps at the Department of Defense Warrior Games scheduled for June. Updates on the competition are available at woundedwarrior.marines.mil. - A man who was arrested by Oceanside police died of unknown causes at the San Diego Central Jail. Robert Shuey, 67, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of DUI, after crashing into a motorcyclist who suffered life-threatening injuries. Shuey was found unconscious in his cell on Tuesday night, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. "Jail staffers performed CPR on Shuey prior to the arrival of paramedics, who took over the lifesaving effort before pronouncing him dead at the scene, sheriff's Lt. Chris Steffen said." (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
