Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The Oceanside Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint today from 8 p.m. to midnight at an undisclosed location within Oceanside city limits. Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The Oceanside City Council has directed city staff to develop education and professional experience requirements for the city treasurer position. As it stands, Oceanside has no additional requirements to run for city treasurer beyond those set by the California Elections Code, i.e., 18 years or older, registered to vote, resident of Oceanside, etc. Carlsbad, which also elects its treasurer, requires candidates to have a four-year college degree in finance or a business-related field and four years of financial work experience. The discussion comes amid an internal investigation into several allegations made against elected City Treasurer Victor Roy last month by Treasury Manager Steve Hodges. (Voice of San Diego)
  3. The first annual VANC Fest is today at the Veterans Association of North County in Oceanside. Multiple awards winner and Billboard chart-topping artist David Longoria will be headlining this year's event and will feature Billboard dance artists April Diamond, DJ Robert Eibach and blues artist Mad Mad Marcae in a special show themed "We Are One" at 9 p.m. The red carpet starts at 3 p.m. and the main events are from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 1617 Mission Avenue, Oceanside. To purchase tickets for the event go to https://buytickets.at/vancfest/739145. (Coast News)
  4. Federal authorities said Thursday that fentanyl trafficking and drug seizures are on the rise in the San Diego region, which they described as "an epicenter" of fentanyl trafficking into the United States. Law enforcement in San Diego and Imperial counties seized 5,091 pounds of fentanyl from October of 2021 to this June, which is around 60% of all fentanyl that has been seized at ports of entry across the nation during that same time span, according to statistics released by Border Patrol officials and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. (Patch)
  5. Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro will celebrate its 16th year at the Oceanside Pier from Sept. 16-18. The nationally televised event is the largest female surf contest in the world, with more than 90 of the world's top pros scheduled to compete. Some of the biggest names in women's surfing are expected to attend, including surfing icon Bethany Hamilton and former Super Girl Champions Carissa Moore, Caroline Marks, Lakey Peterson, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Coco Ho, Sage Erickson, Courtney Conlogue, Caitlin Simmers (Oceanside), Alyssa Spencer (Carlsbad) and Samantha Sibley (San Clemente). Admission to the event is free. (PR Newswire)
