- Hundreds of firefighters Thursday continued to battle a wildfire that scorched thousands of acres, destroyed structures, forced evacuations, and prompted road and school closures in rural eastern San Diego County. The blaze sparked shortly after 2:15 p.m. off Barrett Lake Road and state Route 94 in the Barrett Junction area, southeast of Dulzura, according to Cal Fire San Diego. The fire destroyed four structures, including at least one home. Three people were injured in the fire, two critically. Two men suffered severe burns as the fire spread, Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots said. Paramedics airlifted them to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. A firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene before being released to continue battling the flames. As of Thursday afternoon, the fire, which officials called the Border 32 Fire, was holding at 4,438 acres and was 5 percent contained. (Patch)

- The California Highway Patrol will be intensifying its operations in the San Diego area for three days starting Friday as part of its annual efforts to get intoxicated motorists off the county's roadways over the Labor Day weekend. During the maximum enforcement period, scheduled to run from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday, all available CHP officers will be on duty, scouting local freeways and rural routes for DUI offenders, the state agency advised. Over the Labor Day weekend in 2021, CHP officers statewide arrested 985 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence, 85 more than during the comparable period in 2020. (Patch)
- A severe and prolonged heat wave continued to bake the Southland Thursday, a day after record-setting temperatures were recorded in some areas. State officials called on the public to limit the use of electricity to minimize strain on the power grid. More of the same searing conditions are in store through the Labor Day weekend, with excessive-heat warnings in place into the next workweek. An excessive heat warning is in effect for parts of San Diego County until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures between 85 to 96 degrees are in the forecast for San Diego coastal areas. Extreme heat is expected in Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Chula Vista, National City and San Diego. (KPBS)
