Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Oceanside Police has been shooting a recruitment video for the department. Oceanside PD, like many other industries throughout the country, is facing a shortage of qualified applicants. "It's a challenging career path," said Public Information Officer, Jennifer Atenza. "The challenges that come along with being a police officer in 2022 are very different than 10-20 years ago." (CBS8)
  2. The City of Oceanside recently bought a chunk of the former Garrison Elementary school site with plans to build a sewer lift station and likely more single or multi-family homes. "The school district was driving a hard bargain," said Mayor Esther Sanchez. "It would have been great for the city to have bought the whole parcel and planned it out in terms of affordable housing." (Coast News)
  3. Oceanside based Skout's Honor announced a major milestone of having donated more than 10 million meals to animal rescues across the nation through its Skout's Paw Pledge Program.
Since the company's founding in 2015, the Paw Pledge (which signifies a day's worth of food donated per every Skout's Honor product sold), has been able to make a significant positive impact in collaboration with Greater Good Charities. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  4. Another transit-oriented mixture of apartments and retail shops is headed to the Oceanside City Council, which has approved similar projects recently despite widespread opposition from residents. The project called Ocean Creek will have 295 apartments and 3,000 square feet of retail space in five four-story buildings proposed for the corner of Oceanside Boulevard and Crouch Street. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  5. John Shuster, 39, Elana Meyers Taylor, 37, and Brittany Bowe, 33, are three of the 224 athletes representing the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Taylor was born in Oceanside, California, and raised in Douglasville, Georgia, Representing the U.S., she competed in the two-woman bobsleigh in the Winter Olympics in 2010, 2014 and 2018.
