Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The Oceanside Police Department has devoted this year to spreading joy around the city, all thanks to a $20,000 donation from an Oceanside family. Last month, they gave strangers $100 to help with groceries. This month, they are focusing on high school students. The department put out a call to action to the high schools within the district, to see if they had any students who might need a helping hand in going to their prom. Four students were nominated after overcoming some tough challenges and Wednesday their hard work paid off. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
- The Brother Benno's Center, which has been feeding Oceanside's homeless people since the 1980s, is back in the city's good graces after new restrictions were added to the program a year ago. Complaints have dropped significantly since the city modified the center's conditional use permit to change the hours of operation, added new rules of conduct for guests, created a policy for clients with dogs and improved security and video surveillance, city officials said Monday. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- MiraCosta College will begin a free program this fall for a certificate of completion in affordable housing management. The number of affordable housing units built in California in 2021 increased by 43% over the previous year, according to the 2022 California Housing Partnership's annual Affordable Housing Needs Report released Wednesday. "We have heard from our members who build affordable housing that there is a clear need for staff to manage and maintain these homes," said Stephen Russell, president and CEO of the San Diego Housing Federation. You will also find your "I Voted" sticker inside your official ballot packet. Early voting is underway at the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa. - The North County LGBTQ Resource Center's Pride by the Beach will hold its annual festival from noon to 6 p.m. on June 11. This is the 15th Pride celebration and will be in-person at Civic Central Plaza in downtown Oceanside after a two-year hiatus. This year's theme is "Together" to recognize the excitement and need for the LGBTQ community to gather in celebration and mutual aid.
