Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- A ribbon-cutting ceremony in Oceanside on Monday marked the latest milestone in the County of San Diego's commitment to prioritizing mental health and substance use services. County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Jim Desmond were on hand with Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez and other local officials for the opening ceremony of the new community-based Crisis Stabilization Unit. The Oceanside CSU is located inside the County Live Well Center at 1730 Mission Avenue and will open its doors next week. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- New full-time positions, soaring inflation and increased spending on "quality of life" needs all are accounted for in the nearly $190 million general fund budget Oceanside has proposed for fiscal 2022-23. Anticipated expenditures include a 5 percent increase to cover the high rate of inflation. Higher fuel costs are expected to add about $350,000 to the expense of operating the city's fleet of vehicles next year. Despite that and other increases, the proposed budget is in the black with $189 million in revenue and $186 million in expenses. Final approval is scheduled for a City Council meeting June 8. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- There were no injuries when a vehicle went onto railroad tracks and was struck by a train Sunday in the Camp Pendleton area of San Diego County. The car got off Interstate 5 at Las Pulgas Road and came to a stop on railroad tracks at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The driver got out of the car about five minutes before a southbound Amtrack train struck the vehicle. (San Diego Patch)
- April is widely regarded as "Earth Month" all over the globe. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton honors, protects, and conserves the Earth every day of the year. Plenty of land and resources go into the conservation and care for wildlife aboard the installation. The main force to combat land deterioration and climate issues is known as the Environmental Security Department. This department has a very diverse staff, varying from logistical and environmental planners to 10 biologists who manage the coastal, riparian, and upland species throughout the base, which also implements policies to mitigate the loss of habitats. - An outbreak of bird flu in the U.S. has prompted the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park to begin preparing for an outbreak. The HAN1 avian flu initially appeared was in North Carolina and has since broken out in more than half the states in the country, spreading as far west as Utah and resulting in the killing of 27 million turkeys, chickens and other birds, according to federal officials, who said this week that two zoos have reported the virus in their bird collections. They would not disclose which zoos those were. San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park have 3,700 birds in their care. (City News Service)
