Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The Oceanside Planning Commission approved a plan to re-zone 25.6 acres of land on North River Road from light industrial to medium-density residential. The land was converted to make way for up to 400 future homes in a yet-to-be-determined housing development. The Tierra Norte project is located on the south side of North River Road between Avenida Descanso and Calle Montecito in the North Valley Neighborhood Planning Area. Sergio Madera, the city planner overseeing the project, said a residential project value would be much higher at $181.28 million compared to a $98.05 million industrial project value. - San Diego Humane Society is reducing adoption fees for dogs, cats, kittens and small pets during a nationwide campaign to "Clear the Shelters." In partnership with NBC Universal and Telemundo, dogs, cats and kittens are available for adoption for $20, and small pets are available for $5 through Aug. 31 at the organization's campuses throughout the county. San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at its campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego. Visitsdhumane.org/adopt. - Oceanside couple Steve and Marie Hoveln recently founded a local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which builds beds for children in need. Believing that a bed is essential for a child's well-being, the Hovelns, and other volunteers build bunk beds and single twin beds to be donated locally. The Hovelns say they have always been involved in their community, but while looking for something new to get involved in after pandemic restrictions were relaxed, they decided to found the first local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. - Locale Magazine ranks the "Seven Lunch Spots in Oceanside We Love for a Midday Bite." Oceanside may be one of the most underrated cities in Southern California. Great surfing, friendly people and local eateries are a few things this up-and-coming city has to offer. We're here to savor the charm of Oceanside before this laid-back, beachfront city blows up! Some of their fav lunch spots included Pacific Coast Spirits, LTH, Flying Pig, Petite Madeline and more. (Locale Magazine)
- Oceanside Lifeguard Lieutenant, Blake Faumunia said his team has been busy since big waves from Hurricane Frank hit area beaches. "We're experiencing a six-foot South swell. The conditions have changed a lot in the last six hours. We've got a lot of rescues on our North beaches, that's where all the action is," said Faumunia. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for Oceanside saying this swell is expected to last until Wednesday. Lt. Faumunia wants those going into the water to be aware of the strong rip currents that the waves are creating. (CBS News 8)
