Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The much-debated sand retention groin plan is back on the Oceanside City Council agenda for this Wednesday's meeting. Despite objections by the California Coastal Commission, the Surfrider Foundation and cities to the south, a 2020 study determined that "a consistent source of high-quality sand coupled with the construction of retention structures such as rock groins or an artificial reef were needed to preserve the city's eroding beaches. At this week's meeting, the city is expected to approve $2.6 million for more planning. (The San Diego Union-Tribune / paywall)
- A new dessert concept opens Thursday on Mission Avenue in Oceanside. Jerry's Street Churros will offer handcrafted fresh churros with an assortment of toppings and stuffings, Belgian waffles, and their unique churro hot dog, a sweet-and-salty take on the American classic. For those interested in something savory and fried, they also offer truffle and flavored fries. Owners Tom Ta and Jeremiah Hayden are San Diego natives that are unveiling their first location here in Oceanside. (There San Diego)
- An active duty Camp Pendleton Marine is among three that were arrested last week for their participation in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to court documents. Micah Coomer of Indiana was arrested in Oceanside and said he was waiting for "Civil war 2", authorities said in newly filed court papers. The other two Marines were identified by investigators as Joshua Abate and Dodge Dale Hellonen. The three were arrested for charges including illegal entry and disorderly conduct. (NBC San Diego)
- Oceanside's 2023 Senior Volunteer of the Year is Mr. Peter Cruz. The award was announced last week and Mayor Sanchez proclaimed it to be "Peter Cruz Day." A Navy veteran who served as a medic during the Vietnam War, Mr. Cruz has volunteered at the City's Country Club Senior Center for over ten years, putting in over 3,000 hours of volunteer service for the Senior Nutrition Program.
