Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The mother of a woman shot and killed outside her Oceanside apartment filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the federal government, claiming it failed to prohibit her alleged killer from legally purchasing a firearm, despite the fact that he should have been prohibited from doing so under federal law. The lawsuit was filed in San Diego federal court by the mother of 24-year-old Devon Rideout, a Camp Pendleton-based Naval hospital corpsman who was allegedly gunned down on July 20, 2018, by 29-year-old Eduardo Arriola, who remains jailed awaiting trial for Rideout's murder. - Unvaccinated Californians will no longer be required to mask up in indoor public settings, state officials announced Monday. The move marked one of the first attempts to shed sweeping restrictions for unvaccinated residents. California lifted its indoor mask mandate on Feb. 16 but did not include unvaccinated people. The state had some of the strictest pandemic rules in the nation, but Monday's announcement revoked one of the last mask requirements left in the state. (San Diego Patch)
- Solana Beach and Del Mar have joined Carlsbad in opposing Oceanside's plan to install rock groins as beach sand-retention devices. The regional San Diego Association of Governments, or SANDAG, has a shoreline planning group that should be leading the effort, said Del Mar Councilmember Dave Druker. "Our study was simply a way to move forward," Councilmember Ryan Keim said in a call to last week's Del Mar meeting. "We have not reached the design stage yet. It's a regional problem and needs a regional solution. We have to partner to solve this issue." (Press Release Desk)
- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside started a Youth for Unity program to open up community conversations for teens to discuss racial and social justice. The club launched the new program by hosting two "Teen Talks" at club sites in two Oceanside middle schools, Jefferson Middle School and Martin Luther King Middle School. The fall session included speakers Lt. Taurino Valdovinos and Officer Ashley Witherspoon from the Oceanside Police Department; Juan Gaytan, executive director of Encuentros Leadership, and Alma Sisco-Smith and Adrianne Pope from the North County African American Women's Association. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- The Del Mar City Council voted 3-2 on Feb. 28 to reject North County Transit District's offer to build a shorter, more visually attractive fence to keep people off the blufftop railroad tracks. Instead, the council majority said the district should build no barrier at all, and they hope the California Coastal Commission and the federal Surface Transportation Board will back them up. Mayor Dwight Worden and Councilmember Dave Druker were the only ones in favor of the proposed modifications at the Feb. 28 council meeting. (Del Mar Times)
