Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Oceanside Unified School District has a budget surplus for the first time since 2017. During a June 28 meeting, school board trustees approved the district's $1.5 million-surplus budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, which began this month. According to its combined summary of funds, the district expects to bring in $280.9 million and spend $279.4 million next year, leaving the district with an end balance of $1.5 million. (Coast News)
  2. Oceanside City Treasurer Victor Roy allegedly looked at pornography on a computer at the city's Mission Branch Library in June 2021, according to an anonymous complaint filed against him at the time. Assistant City Manager Michael Gossman told Voice of San Diego that library staff gave Roy a warning, and that staff has not witnessed any other inappropriate behavior by him since. The allegation was one of many included in a June 6 email from Steve Hodges, Oceanside's treasury manager, to Roy and that has been circulating online since. Gossman confirmed that the email is authentic. (Voice of San Diego)
  3. For the first time, a North Island brown kiwi has hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, park officials announced Thursday. The male chick hatched June 13 at the park in Escondido.
"We are very excited over the hatching of this chick," said Andrew Stehly, curator of birds at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. "Northern Island brown kiwis are notoriously difficult to breed in human care, and this is the first time we have hatched this species at the Safari Park." (San Diego Patch)
  4. The Oceanside Museum of Art exhibition of Phillip K. Smith, III: 'Lozenge-Variant 1,' is one of five works of art to see in San Diego this summer. KPBS Art Editor, Julia Dixon Evans, recommends that locals and visitors check out five notable works of art on view in the region: Margaret Noble at Plumosa Park; Phillip K. Smith III at OMA; Natalia Ventura at The Front; Chris Burden and Bryon Kim at MCASD downtown; and Alika Cooper at Oolong Gallery. (KPBS)

Are you an Oceanside-Camp Pendleton resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
