OCEANSIDE, CA – Two schools were placed on lockdown after a suspicious and possibly armed man was spotted in an Oceanside neighborhood Thursday, authorities said.

A sheriff's helicopter crew helped Oceanside police search for the man just east of Interstate 5 and north of state Route 78, a sheriff's lieutenant said.

As a precaution, Palmquist Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School were briefly placed on modified lockdown. Classrooms and buildings were locked but instruction continued, according to Oceanside Unified School District.
