Oceanside Seeks Public Input On Beachfront Plans At Tues Meeting

Oceanside explores potential improvements to the Junior Seau Amphitheater/Bandshell and Beach Community Center. Public meeting 6pm Tuesday.

OCEANSIDE, CA — Over the past several years the City of Oceanside has undertaken a range of projects to upgrade the Downtown Beachfront area including the Tyson Street, Sportsfisher Drive, and Breakwater Way restroom improvement projects. Phase I of the Beachfront Improvement Project began construction in April 2020 and is targeted for completion this winter.

Now the City is ready to explore potential improvements to the Junior Seau Amphitheater/Bandshell and Beach Community Center as well as the plaza area below the pier. Some of these facilities date back to the 1930s and are in need of renovation and are no longer considered sufficient to meet the needs of the community.

The first public community outreach meeting of the Oceanside Beachfront Improvements Feasibility Study Phase 2 is tomorrow from 6-8 p.m. at the Civic Center Library Community Rooms (330 N. Coast Hwy)

After residents expressed concerns about potential plans at the August 3rd Advisory Committee Meeting #1, the City posted this update on 8/6/21:
The City’s project team is in the initial stages of soliciting community feedback on potential improvements to the area. Despite some rumors, there have been no plans discussed or presented as part of the current study that suggest demolishing and/or replacing any of the beachfront facilities or adding a parking structure in the area.

The City will seek extensive public input to prioritize ideas on potential improvements. The findings of the feasibility study will be shared with various City Boards & Commissions in order to capture further public input before sharing a final study with the City Council.

What is the Phase 2 Beachfront Improvement Feasibility Study?

The study will identify and analyze existing site conditions, evaluate site opportunities and constraints, and collect input from stakeholder groups and the community. Based on City needs and extensive public input, site concepts and design options will be identified and ultimately a recommended design option will be brought to City Council for approval. Prior visioning efforts have occurred and will serve as an important reference in exploring options and potential improvements.

It should be noted that this is a feasibility study, therefore the recommended design option will not be a formalized design. Funding for future design and construction phases have not been identified and are contingent on City Council direction and approval.
