  2. A brush fire that burned hundreds of acres along the coast of Orange County was sending smoke into parts of San Diego County, residents reported Thursday. Viewer Sherry Spencer sent a photo showing a haze of smoke over the Oceanside Pier, which is about 30 miles south of where a fire started in the Aliso Woods Canyon area between Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach. A smoke advisory was issued for parts of Orange County Thursday but had not yet affected San Diego County. (NBC San Diego)
  3. A total of 20 homes were destroyed and 11 damaged in a brush fire that devastated a ridgetop community in Laguna Niguel, fire officials announced Thursday afternoon. Firefighters trudging through difficult terrain around the Coronado Pointe neighborhood of large, multimillion-dollar houses. Two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, officials said, but no details were disclosed. They are expected to be OK. Evacuation orders for about 900 homes will be extended to Friday. 4. Marine Corps veteran Amy Forsythe, who was stationed at Camp Pendleton for nearly two decades, has published a book, titled "Heroes Live Here: A Tribute to Camp Pendleton Marines Since 9/11." The 206-page historical work features a description of more than a dozen monuments and markers at Camp Pendleton that honor the sacrifices of Marines over the past two decades, who served in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. A detailed map of the monuments' locations is included along with 150 color photographs of the memorials. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  5. A giraffe born with a disorder is thriving at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, thanks to "lifesaving" leg braces that helped correct abnormalities that threatened the calf's survival. The 3-month-old female calf — whose name Msituni means "in the forest" in Swahili — suffered from hyperextension of the carpi, bones that are equivalent to those in the human wrist. The disorder caused Msituni's front legs to bend improperly, and made it difficult for her to stand and walk. (San Diego Patch)
