Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The Mission Pacific Hotel in downtown Oceanside made the list of the "Best hotels in California 2023" under the category of "Best for a buzzing beach resort." The accolades of note for the hotel were "it's easy Californian boutique living, with sleek design, balconies overlooking an ocean-facing courtyard... a rooftop bar for sundowners, plus the Top Gun House — a pie restaurant made famous in the eponymous film." Mission Pacific joins a prestigious group of 13 hotels that includes Hotel del Coronado and the Disneyland Hotel. (AOL)
- Caitlin Simmers from Oceanside is among seven top surfers from around the world to join the 2023 Championship Tour (CT). The 17-year-old surfer qualified for the tour in 2022 but decided to keep competing on the Challenger Series for an additional year, which she rounded out tied for third. "My goal is probably just to make the cut. I'm just going to see what happens, maybe try to do some roundhouse cutbacks, maybe get barreled. That'd be pretty sick." (TheInertia.com/paywall)
- An Oceanside man received a five-month prison sentence last week for threatening to kill Senator Chuck Schumer of New York. Johnathan Ryan McGuire was charged with leaving a voicemail message at Schumer's D.C. office, which included antisemitic and homophobic slurs and threatened to "blow your (expletive) head off" and "send some bullets your way," according to an FBI agent's affidavit filed in San Diego federal court. The affidavit also states that U.S. Capitol Police documented "numerous threats by McGuire to various members of U.S. Congress and a USCP officer" between 2019 and 2021, which were allegedly sent by phone and email. McGuire pleaded guilty last year to one count of threats in interstate commerce. (Times of San Diego)
- Genentech plans to build a new $450 million biologics manufacturing facility at its biotech campus in Oceanside. The new facility will be "one of the most modern commercial-scale biotech manufacturing facilities in the world" and will expand the number of buildings on the company's 60-acre site on Antibody Way. It's also expected to add 150 new positions by the time it's operational in 2025. Genentech said Oceanside was chosen for the expansion because of proximity to "world-class biotech talent" in the San Diego area. (Patch)
