Happy Thursday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know in town today.

First, today's weather:

Sunny; nice in the afternoon. High: 68 Low: 39.

Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. People who donate blood or plasma through the Red Cross during February will receive a $10 Amazon.com gift card, plus be entered to win two tickets to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles, California: Find upcoming blood drives near Oceanside. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. Surfing has surged during the pandemic, as more people have picked up longboards and signed up for lessons. Many of these new surfers are kids or teenagers, such as Caitlin Simmers, 16, an Oceanside, California local who has been quickly moving up the competitive ranks of the sport. When families are not getting their feet wet they can soak up Southern California's surf scene at the California Surf Museum, which features a special exhibit on Simmers and a comprehensive display of surfboards over the decades. (National Geographic)
  3. Ocean's 11 Casino is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Oceanside this month. The casino will give away $50,000 in cash drawings and prizes throughout January with $20,000 in drawings on January 29th. A small ceremonial toast with special guests will take place at 1 pm on Saturday. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  4. Following a Jan. 15 tsunami triggered by a volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga, local activist group Public Watchdogs raised concerns over what a more catastrophic tsunami could do to the decommissioning San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, or SONGS, and its fuel storage. "Our worst-case fear is that a tsunami would breach the seawall and clog the passive-air cooling system at the beachfront San Onofre nuclear waste with mud and debris," said Charles Langley, executive director of Public Watchdogs. (Coast News)
  5. A lawsuit has been filed against the National Football League alleging that the league and officials with the Chargers violated NFL relocation policies when team owners approved the Chargers' move from San Diego to Los Angeles. Mayor Todd Gloria and City Attorney Mara Elliott issued a joint statement that said, "Suing the National Football League is a costly and uphill battle. Given that city taxpayers would be the recipient of any damages and restitution the court may award if litigation prevails, we wish Mr. Aguirre success in this effort."(City News Service)
