Here are the five top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- A vacant California Department of Transportation site in Oceanside is one of five state-owned sites identified for housing as part of the Excess Land for Affordable Housing Executive Order signed by Governor Newsom. "California's housing affordability crisis has been more than a half century in the making and the state is tackling this foundational challenge with an innovative 'all of the above' approach," said Governor Newsom. "We've made unprecedented investments and progress to create more housing in California over the past four years, including using state-owned land to build homes." (Office of Governor Gavin Newsom)
- Oceanside's city treasurer, Victor Roy, said he was doing investigative work when he was viewing "inappropriate material" at a city library and was on a fact-finding mission to see if one could access naughty material at an Oceanside library. But according to a report released this week by the City of Oceanside, Roy's lewd library investigation was a fraud. Plus, the report said he lied about being asked to leave by the librarian who saw him performing his peek-a-boo investigation. The report was commissioned by the city of Oceanside who hired the Zappia Law Firm of Huntington Beach to get to the bottom of a public dispute between Roy and full-time city employee Steve Hodges. (San Diego Reader)
- Oceanside police are looking for the Ford Fusion driver who fled after striking a pedestrian Sunday evening, leaving the victim with major injuries, police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza said. The pedestrian was struck while crossing the street mid-block, she said. The victim was flown to a hospital with critical injuries. Atenza said investigators believe the motorist who fled was driving a 2006 to 2009 blue Ford Fusion. Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the traffic investigator handling the case at (760) 435-4431 or email the investigator at dcpaul@oceansideca.org. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- The San Diego Blood Bank on Monday urged people with type O blood to donate because the blood bank has hit "critically low levels" of both O negative and O positive blood types. Type O blood is the first used in emergencies when a patient's blood type is unknown, and for massive traumas when a large volume of blood is needed quickly, according to the San Diego Blood Bank. Type O negative is the universal blood type, meaning anyone can receive that type of blood when needed. To be eligible to donate blood, donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in general good health. Eligible donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment at 619-400-8251 or SanDiegoBloodBank.org. (Patch)
- Two men were arrested in connection with the burglary at a Vista school that was caught on surveillance video, authorities said Monday. Employees were monitoring the surveillance video at 2:30 a.m. Sunday when they saw the burglars at the school in the 800 block of Sycamore Avenue, according to Sgt. Austin Smith of the Vista Sheriff's Station. The employees provided deputies with updates as they responded. A Google search indicates a Montessori school is located on that block. While checking the area with the help of an Escondido police K-9, the deputies located 56-year-old Richard Wells near the entrance and 35-year-old Robert Lund outside the building, Smith said. Both were taken into custody without incident. (Patch)
