Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. A transit-oriented development with 140 to 150 homes has been proposed for property near a Sprinter light rail station in Oceanside. Representatives of Oceanside Trolley Place LLC will meet with city Planning Department officials this week to discuss details of the project to be built on vacant property near College Boulevard at the western end of Olive Drive. The property near the College Boulevard Sprinter Station has been designated as a "smart growth opportunity area" by the San Diego Association of Governments, a term used for higher density development near public transit. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. Oceanside Adventures recently captured an incredible video of gray whales off the coast of Oceanside on one of its aptly named whale-watching cruises. It's time for the annual Gray Whale Migration and a recent group of Oceanside Adventures passengers was fortunate to get up close to a northbound gray whale passing by Oceanside on the way back up to their feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  3. In celebration of Women's History Month, we're shining a light throughout March on women who have created, own and run businesses in golf. Holly Kennedy and her husband, John, own the lease for the Emerald Isle Golf Course, a sporty, 57-year-old executive track in Oceanside that was in total disrepair when they took it over in late 2014. In the eight years since, they have transformed it into a happening and lively place, combining their extensive golf experience and a love of the game with a can-do vibe that is contagious. (GolfDigest.com)
  4. America has a tragic secret shame — suicide is taking more of our country's military heroes than combat! According to the White House, more than 65,000 veterans have killed themselves since 2010, more than the total number of soldiers who perished in Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam combined. Ashley Jackson was an ammunition technician in the Marines. In April 2015, after an argument with her husband at their Camp Pendleton, home, she hanged herself with a dog leash. (National Enquirer)
  5. Commercial tuna boat Millie G recently docked in Oceanside with nearly 7,000 juvenile White Seabass that were raised at HUBBS SeaWorld Research Institute. From Oceanside, the fish will make the voyage to Catalina. The fish begin in Carlsbad before making a trek to Catalina to grow. Once they reach the right size the fish are brought back as a part of the replenishment program and will get released in November when they'll be 14 inches to 16 inches long. (CBS News 8)
