Here are the top four stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Despite California's goals to move away from a dependence on oil and gas, record temperatures this week have forced officials to turn back to natural gas to keep the lights on for residents, who continue to face the threat of widespread outages as energy demand heightens. The Western heat wave that arrived in the state last week has been hotter and lingered longer in California than in any other state. A text message sent by the state's Office of Emergency Services may have helped the state avoid rolling blackouts Tuesday, but meeting the state's energy demand has also required activating generators fueled by natural gas. (Patch)
- The California Coastal Commission approved an ordinance passed by the Oceanside City Council that would allow tattoo parlors to operate within 500 feet of a residential neighborhood as long as there is a freeway in between the parlor and the neighborhood. While the city council can change zoning rules in the inland parts of the city, the coastal zones still need to get approval from the California Coastal Commission. Like most cities, Oceanside also regulates where other businesses like gun ranges, pool halls, massage establishments and cannabis facilities can be located. (NBC San Diego)
- The city of Oceanside is considering implementing stricter qualifications for candidates running for the city treasurer position since a controversy over an email with allegations against Oceanside City Treasurer Victor Roy. The email accused him of mishandling city investments, illegally asking city employees to donate to his election campaign, viewing "inappropriate material" on a public library computer and acting inappropriately toward employees. The city's response opened an internal investigation into the allegations, which is now in its final stages. (Voice of San Diego)
- The Pure Water Oceanside project is on track to receive nearly $10 million in federal grant money, the city recently announced. The purification facility for recycled drinking water opened in Oceanside earlier this year and currently contributes more than 20% of Oceanside's drinking water. Ultimately, the project will provide more than 32% of the city's water supply, up to 5 million gallons per day as the region and California face serious drought conditions. (Oside News)
