Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The Oceanside City Council awarded Cox Construction Company of Vista a $13.5 million contract to build the replacement for Oceanside's downtown Fire Station No. 1, which was built in 1929. Construction is expected to begin in August to build the new fire station on a Civic Center Drive property the city bought for $1.6 million in 2004 a little more than one block away from the old station. The old firehouse on Pier View Way will become part of the Oceanside Museum of Art. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. Oceanside Treasurer Victor Roy faces serious charges made by Treasury Manager Steve Hodges, according to correspondence leaked to the public last week. Allegations against Roy include that he tried to get a city employee to contribute to his 2020 reelection campaign, that Roy lobbied to get the city to invest with brokerages already rejected by the city, and that Roy caused city staff to become "uncomfortable" because he was watching "inappropriate material" at the Mission Branch Library. (San Diego Reader)
  3. A rise in respiratory virus cases among shelter dogs prompted the San Diego Humane Society to quarantine affected animals and temporarily suspend dog surrender services, the organization announced Monday. Testing confirmed that the condition is canine pneumovirus, a relatively new and emerging virus that causes symptoms similar to other canine respiratory viruses, according to the Humane Society. While the affected dogs are quarantined, the organization is unable to take in owner-surrendered dogs at its locations in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego, except in emergency cases that threaten the health of the pet. 4. Applebee's restaurants in San Diego County are celebrating the Fourth of July with free kid's meals. In celebration of the holiday, Applebee's locations owned and operated by Flynn Restaurant Group will offer a "Kids Eat Free" special on Monday, July 4. Customers can get a free kid's meal with the purchase of an adult entrée. The dine-in only deal is limited to two kids, ages 12 and younger, per adult. Participating Applebee's restaurants include Oceanside at 2146 Vista Way (San Diego Patch)
