Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The life expectancy for the average American fell by nearly three years between 2019 and 2021 — the sharpest two-year decline in nearly a century, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wednesday. Though the average life expectancy in the Golden State remains among the highest in the country, the pandemic still took a toll on California's life expectancy, the data shows. The states with the highest life expectancy in 2020 are Hawaii (80.7 years), Washington (79.2 years), Minnesota (79.1 years), and California, Massachusetts and New Hampshire (79 years). The states with the lowest life expectancy in 2020 include Mississippi (71.9 years), West Virginia (72.8 years), Louisiana (73.1 years), Alabama (73.2 years) and Kentucky (73.5 years). (Patch)
  2. The National Weather Service reminds everyone that the Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday. This warning covers San Diego County Coastal Areas including the cities of Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Chula Vista, National City and San Diego. Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures of 87 to 96 will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the midday sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. (National Weather Service)
  3. A panel discussion with several Marine Corps veterans, titled "Outside the Wire:Stories from Front Line Combat Veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan" is 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Sunshine Brooks Theater, 217 N. Coast Hwy. The veterans, Maj. Fred Galvin, author of "A Few Bad Men," Amy Forsythe, author of "Heroes Live Here" and Maj. Scott A. Huesing, author of "Echo in Ramadi," will share how they fought, survived and returned home to write and share their perspectives on war in their bestselling books. The panel will be moderated by Robert Young Pelton, author, journalist, and documentary film director. Tickets are $20. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  4. A boy was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle in Vista, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said Saturday. The 11-year-old child was trying to cross the street at the intersection of North Santa Fe Avenue and Vista Village Drive just before 6 p.m. Friday, Sgt. E. Cottrell said. He was taken by air ambulance to Rady's Children's Hospital with serious injuries, the sergeant said. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators, Cottrell said. The motorist was not suspected of driving while impaired. (Patch)
