Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The Veterans Association of North County hosted a bipartisan Congressional field hearing led by U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) on Monday. The hearing focused on ending hunger among veterans, particularly in response to the effects the COVID-19 pandemic had on food insecurity for veterans and their families. Rep. Levin, who serves as Chair of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, questioned a number of local experts about the policies needed to ensure all veterans have access to adequate nutrition. 2. The Samoan Cultural Celebration returned to the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater for the first time in nearly five years. The weeklong festival celebrates Oceanside's Samoan population and culture with multiple community sports events and barbecues held throughout the week. The event culminated with a cup stacking competition featuring athletes from around the world, including South Korea, Seattle and New York. This year, the celebration honored the 10th anniversary of the death of Oceanside High School star linebacker Junior Seau. (Coast News)
  3. Today is National French Fry Day and fast-food chains across the Golden State are determined to get fries in the hands of every Californian. Wendy's made the bold move to turn fry day into fry week, offering free French fries with different purchases. McDonald's will give away a free large fry order to customers who place an order via the app. Burger King will shake things up and offer free Chicken Fries with mobile app orders. (San Diego Patch)
  4. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Tuesday for the 27th consecutive day, decreasing 3.2 cents to $6.04, its lowest amount since May 27. The average price has decreased 33.3 cents during the streak, including seven-tenths of a cent Monday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. The streak of decreases follows a run of 19 increases in 20 days totaling 35.5 cents. (City News Service)
  5. Investigators from the CHP Oceanside Area office located an alleged suspect vehicle wanted in connection with a pursuit over the weekend. The abandoned vehicle was discovered Monday in the Pauma area. On Sunday afternoon, a CHP Oceanside unit initiated a traffic stop on an Audi sedan on SR-76 near Red Gate Road for a broken taillight. The Audi failed to yield and the officer broadcast the pursuit over the radio. During the pursuit, the driver threw a backpack out of the window of his vehicle. It was recovered and a loaded handgun was discovered inside. No shots were fired at or by officers during the pursuit.(Fallbrook / Bonsall Villlage News)
