Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Volunteers removed 1,645 pounds of trash from San Diego County's beaches the morning after Independence Day festivities, Surfrider Foundation San Diego leaders announced Thursday. In three hours, the 429 volunteers removed the trash — largely single-use plastic — from beaches up and down the coast as part of Surfrider's "Morning After" beach cleanup series. Surfrider volunteers hosted four cleanups in Ocean Beach and Oceanside while partnering organizations hosted the remaining sites, Mission Beach Park, Crystal Pier, Fiesta Island and Moonlight Beach. (San Diego Patch)
  2. Partnering With Parents has purchased a vacant office campus situated on six acres at 1305-1320 Union Plaza Court in Oceanside. The location is just off Oceanside Blvd near the I-5 freeway. Partnering With Parents, doing business as The Classical Academies, acquired the property for $11.8 million. The organization of tuition-free California public charter schools in North San Diego County plans to convert the four-building, 99,968-square-foot office park into a school campus. (REBusinessOnline)
  3. The Medical Examiner's Office is investigating if a bone found in a creek in Carlsbad Sunday belonged to a human. A man came across a bone at El Salto Falls on July 3, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. The man took the bone home and reported the discovery to authorities that evening, CPD said. An Oceanside officer responded first and passed the report on to CPD. By around 10:30 p.m., the Medical Examiner's Office had custody of the bone, according to the Oceanside Police Department. (NBC San Diego)
  4. Two more members of a nationwide "grandparent scam" network have pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act known as RICO. According to court documents, the defendants were part of a criminal enterprise that engaged in extortion and fraud to swindle more than $2 million from 70-plus elderly victims across the nation. At least 10 elderly victims who resided in San Diego County lost over $300,000 to the fraud. (Department of Justice)
  5. Krispy Kreme doughnuts is giving away Free Krispy Kreme Donuts every month for a year to celebrate the chain's 85th birthday this month. The chain will give out promotional birthday cards good for one dozen free Original Glazed Doughnuts per month for one year. Customers must be 18 years old to win the yearlong prize. In San Diego County, locals can go to the Krispy Kreme locations in Chula Vista, Oceanside and San Diego from July 11-14 for a chance to be randomly selected. (San Diego Patch)
