Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. A man who killed a female Navy corpsman at an Oceanside apartment complex nearly four years ago was sentenced Friday to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Eduardo Arriola, 29, was convicted by a Vista jury of first-degree murder, plus a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, for the July 20, 2018, killing of 24-year-old Devon Rideout. Arriola was a former Marine who was discharged for desertion and later diagnosed with schizophrenia, leading to four hearings between the killing and his trial to determine whether he was mentally competent to stand trial. Three separate doctors found him competent, according to court documents. - (KUSI)
  2. Work has begun on a new 26-home community on seven acres in Oceanside's Fire Mountain neighborhood. IHP Capital Partners and California West Communities announced the partnership to create 26 Tides, consisting of two-and three-story single-family detached homes. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2023, with home sales anticipated to open in the second quarter. The community will also provide two affordable units to be rented to those with low incomes. (Times of San Diego)
  3. San Diego County Crime Log: A look at some of this week's police, fire and courtroom stories from across the region: A man pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for fatally stabbing a 77-year-old retiree at the victim's Oceanside beach house. Police arrested a former Granite Hills High School teacher on felony and misdemeanor sexual misconduct charges. Five SDSU football players purportedly carried out gang-rape sex assaults during an off-campus house party last Oct. 16. (San Diego Patch)
  4. The first VANC Fest will be held at the Veterans Association of North County on Friday, August 12, with the Red Carpet starting at 3 p.m. and the main events from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. VANC Fest is a multi-sensory experience with 10 Food and Drink stations with many chefs along with special performances. The VANC Fest fine art gallery will feature some of the best artists that San Diego has to offer. This year we are featuring art from Alexander Salazar, Ruben Chato, Patrick Carney, Timmy Woods, and Pilar Montano. VANC Fest Celebrity and Chef Showcase is a fundraiser to benefit active-duty and veterans and their families. (Digital Journal)
  5. San Diego Weekend Guide: Aug. 5-7. Life is a cabaret, old chum, so why not stroll from stage to stage, booth to booth or brewer to brewer to enjoy music, art and sips this San Diego weekend? Tiki Oasis, touted as the world's largest such festival, continues through Sunday. Artists from all over Latin America convene at Old Town's Bazaar del Mundo for the free Latin American Festival. Artists will set up camp in Point Loma Saturday and Sunday for Art Walk, the free event that includes this Liberty Station stop. (Times of San Diego)
