Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The Golden State will lift its indoor mask mandate for schoolchildren at 11:59 p.m. on March 11, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday morning. The news comes as the state prepares to lift its indoor mask mandate for unvaccinated residents today — a major step toward unwinding the state's stringent mask rules. "California continues to adjust our policies based on the latest data and science, applying what we've learned over the past two years to guide our response to the pandemic," Newsom said in a joint statement with Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Monday morning. (San Diego Patch)
- Art lovers can take a sneak peek at "happily ever after" during Oceanside's First Friday Art Walk at the Brooks Theater Gallery on March 4. Presented by Oceanside Theatre Company and New Village Arts the Art Walk will also include an artist reception at 6:30 pm. The artist reception is a free opportunity to meet and chat with the exhibiting artists and to see their interpretation of every fairytale's famous ending. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Street homelessness and despair appear to be rising on city streets and partial San Diego Cpunto data shows drug overdose deaths also spiked among homeless residents last year, ushering in renewed calls for new solutions. The suffering of residents residing outside is palpable. Many are pessimistic that help is coming and have recently endured cold, rainy weather amid spiking COVID cases. Partial data on deaths investigated by the county Medical Examiner's Office shows deaths of unhoused people are also rising. (Voice of San Diego)
- The City of Oceanside is unveiling a top to bottom makeover of its new Welcome Center. "We are in beautiful Oceanside, California," said Courtney Voorhees. She has been an Oceanside volunteer for 17 years. Courtney gave us a tour of the new gateway to Oceanside that feels more like a surf shack than a Welcome Center. (CBS News 8)
- A fiery traffic crash Monday afternoon on southbound Interstate 15 near the Murrieta/Temecula border resulted in one serious injury requiring a burn victim to be airlifted via helicopter to an area hospital. The crash was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m. near the French Valley Parkway exit, according to a preliminary California Highway Patrol report. According to the agency, at least one car was "fully engulfed" in fire and a male victim was burned. (Temecula Patch)
Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is "Drink like there's tomorrow.") Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We've tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start.Betera has extended their 15% discount on first orders to Daily readers, in appreciation for the enthusiastic response so far.
