Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. "Songs for a New World," a musical written and composed by Tony-award winner, Jason Robert Brown ("The Last Five Years,""Bridges of Madison County") opens for a preview this weekend at the Historic Brooks Theatre in downtown Oceanside. The Oceanside Theatre Company (OTC) is presenting "Songs for a New World", in conjunction with Teatro San Diego. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The San Diego Metro area (from Oceanside to the north and Chula Vista to the south) landed in the top 20 summer travel destinations in a new ranking from WalletHub. Los Angeles and San Diego were the only two California metro areas that made it into the top 20, with Los Angeles coming in at the No. 6 spot and San Diego at No. 19. (Across California Patch)
  3. San Diego's latest homeless census found the number of people living on the street and in shelters has grown 10 percent since the last count in 2020. The numbers are even higher in Oceanside, which now has the highest unsheltered homeless population in North County. The Regional Task Force on Homelessness tallied 8,427 homeless individuals across the county in late February for its annual point-in-time count. (San Diego Patch)
  4. The Shoppes at Carlsbad mall is nearing agreement on plans to move San Diego Gas & Electric Company's regional maintenance yard from the old Encina power plant property to a spot outside The Shoppes at Carlsbad mall. The location on El Camino Real is just south of Oceanside and runs along the Buena Vista Creek and State Route 78. The search for a new maintenance yard has been underway since the city, NRG and SDG&E signed a deal eight years ago to demolish the coastal plant and its 400-foot-tall smokestack, but a few hurdles remain. The mall location is a relatively recent addition to the more than dozen sites considered so far. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
