Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The driver who allegedly struck and killed 63-year-old Oceanside resident Rafael Jurado Cardona pleaded not guilty to charges on Tuesday. Twenty-two-year-old Isabella Herrera of Oceanside is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, for the Feb. 26 fatal crash. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, the victim was hit by a Buick sedan while he was changing a tire on SR-78 near the Oceanside border. Herrera is out on $500,000 bail and could get up to 10 years if convicted. (Times of San Diego)
- Oceanside seems to be on every travel advisor's list of "bests" these days, which comes as no surprise to those of us fortunate enough to live here year-round. The latest accolades include being among only six locations in California named "The Best Tropical Places in the US: California." Check out what the experts had to say about our "coastal haven": (Miami Herald)
- After the Oceanside housing department suspended the Family Self-Sufficiency program for low-income families, it took the story of one brave resident to get the program reinstated. At the January meeting of the Housing Commission, single mom Claudia Muñoz spoke about how the program changed the lives of her family. With the help of programs like these, Muñoz went from being a homeless mom to eventually becoming the director of an adult day program. "There's a negative stigma associated with government assistance programs," Muñoz said. "But I am living proof that they do work, and if it wasn't for Family Self-Sufficiency, I'm not sure where my daughters and I would be." (Voice of San Diego)
