Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- An intoxicated driver that crashed and killed his passengers in 2020 was sentenced to eight years in state prison on Friday. Peter John Meno was convicted of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for the crash that killed 22-year-old Jaden Rowley of Oceanside and 19-year-old Matthew "Max" Cate of Vista. During his trial, Meno alleged that the passengers had unfastened their seat belts, which family members said was blaming the victims. At the sentencing, the judge said, "It seems that there's been a constant theme from the defendant of trying to shift blame towards the victims in this case rather than taking accountability for his own actions." - Oceanside Air Force veteran Mike Caliguiri celebrated his 90th birthday by jumping out of a plane, again! Mike joined the Air Force 72 years ago and served his country for 26 years, so he's no stranger to flying. The Vietnam veteran says jumping is a family tradition. "We did it for my 75th birthday, we did it for my 80th birthday and this time we had 11 immediate family members jumping. 11 of us," said Mike. (CBS 8 San Diego)
- Gas prices in Oceanside continued the near-daily increase and rose by 6.9 cents in just the last week. While the average price for a gallon in Oceanside remains below the $4.97 rate for San Diego County, it's well above the national average of $3.39 per gallon. "Oil Price Information Service and the Energy Information Administration report that West Coast refinery utilization rates are down to 77.8% due to maintenance and breakdowns," said Doug Shupe, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager. In Oceanside, gas prices can be found for as low as $4.36 per gallon, according to Gas Buddy. (Patch)
