Pedestrian Fatally Struck On SR-78 In Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, CA — A pedestrian was hit and killed early Tuesday on state Route 78 in northern San Diego County, authorities said.

The crash happened at 1:25 a.m. on eastbound SR-78, west of El Camino Real in Oceanside, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 59-year-old Escondido woman driving a Mercedes Benz CLK320 struck a 31-year-old Vista man who was walking on the highway, Officer Hunter Gerber said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Gerber said. His name was not released.

"It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs contributed to the cause of this collision," Gerber said.
