Police ID Oceanside Homicide Victim, Possible Suspect

Detectives said they established probable cause to arrest 69-year-old Oceanside resident Michael Topping at the end of the standoff.

OCEANSIDE, CA — A woman found dead during an hours-long standoff this week in Oceanside has been identified along with a possible suspect, authorities said Friday.

Officers responded at about 9 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a disturbance in the 2300 block of Fallen Leaf Road in Oceanside, where they found a woman dead, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 46-year-old Oceanside resident Bethany Whitwer.

Based on the investigation, detectives said they established probable cause to arrest 69-year-old Oceanside resident Michael Topping, who was taken into custody at the end of the standoff, police said.

Topping had barricaded himself inside the home, prompting police to call in SWAT and crisis negotiation teams. Prior to being detained, Topping inflicted multiple life-threatening injuries to himself, police said.

Topping was taken to a hospital. Police said he is now in the custody of the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
