- If you are looking for the positive side of news, we are here to help. Patch has sweet Southern California stories we hope you will enjoy. A $6 million Powerball ticket sold in Riverside County. Electric Ocean at Seaworld San Diego returns. A maltipoo brightens lives at an assisted living home. Marilyn Monroe birthday celebration takes place and there are more Saturday Smiles. (San Diego Patch)
- Democrat Rep. Mike Levin is leading his Republican opponents in fundraising in his bid for re-election to the 49th Congressional District. Levin has nearly $3 million in campaign contributions, followed by Brian Maryott, his opponent from the last election who has raised more than $2 million. The former mayor of San Juan Capistrano lost to Levin by six points in the last election, but Republicans hope that soaring gas prices, inflation and other issues will allow their party to flip Congressional seats this term. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- San Diego could be looking at a primary election that tilts to the right, even as the demographic and voter registration trends reflected a city getting bluer. At least, that's an early read based on the number of ballots returned thus far, and the breakdown of the people who've sent them in, said Paul Mitchell, the vice president of Political Data Intelligence, which provides ballot tracking and voter registration tools to campaigns across the state. (Voice of San Diego)
- The number of people dying in traffic crashes on U.S. roadways reached a 16-year high nationally in 2021. In California, there were an estimated 4,258 traffic fatalities in 2021 — a 10.7-percent increase from 3,847 reported in 2020, according to a report released in May by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration titled "Crash Stats: Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021." Nationwide, an estimated 42,915 people lost their lives on U.S. highways last year, up from 38,824 in 2020. (Across California Patch)
