Poway Titans claim their 7th Battle for the Belt Mat Title

2022 Battle for the Belt Tournament News

The Poway Titans known for their wrestling tradition in the town of San Diego is currently ranked 2nd in the State of California along with a 12th ranking in the country once again rule the invitational tournament scene. After winning the Reno and Doc Buchanan title, the Titans claimed their 7th overall Battle for the Belt Mat Title and 3rd under Current Head Coach John Meyers as they finished in first place with 344.5 points, 8 finalists along with 3 champions . At the finals, they were 4 matches between Clovis ranked 3rd along with Poway ranked 2nd.

The finals started at 132 where Brock Bobzien of Poway won by a default over Dario Lemus of Clovis. Palm Desert's Sonny King followed at 195 pounds with an 8-0 win over Braden Peace of Poway. Noah Tolentino became Poway's second Battle for the Belt champion as he defeated Temecula Valley's Alec Peralta by a 6-3 at 145.

At 170 pounds Ceasar Garza of Oakdale High who was named one of the Outstanding Wrestlers of the Tourament recorded a 2:44 Evan Gilbert of Calvary Chapel. Devyn Che the second finalist for the Church Boyz of Calvary Chapel scored 2 takedowns and 1 escape as he defeated Poway's Laird Root 8-5 at 152. Tyler Hodges Clovis first individual champion of the tournament defeated Sergiy Nyzynyk of Los Gatos in a close 7-4 match.

Clovis claimed their second champion of the contest at 106 pounds as Nikade Zinkin s escaped in the 6th overtime of the match with 15.6 and won by a 2-1 score over Poway's Edwin Sierra. Temecula claimed their first champion of the tournament as Abel Gaitan broke a 1-1 tie as he escaped with 19 seconds left in overtime as he defeated Ethan Parco of Los Gatos 2-1 in overtime .

At 113 Koda Hodeman, Clovis's 3rd champion defeated Poway's Elias Navida 2-0. In another Clovis vs Poway final at 285 pounds with Mikey Lytle recorded a fall over Clovis's Christian Smith in 2:42. Mark Marin, 4th champion for Clovis was named one of the Outstanding Wrestlers defeated Caleb Vanbuskirk by a 4-3 score at 220 pounds.

Brock Mantanona Palm Desert's 2nd champion recorded a 3:54 pin over George Rosas of Clovis at 126, Ethan Perryman, Temecula's 2nd chanmpion recorded a 5-3 win over Romero Sanchez of Esperanza at 120 pounds and MJ Gaitan's 42 second fall over Poway's Angelo Posada was named one of the Outstanding Wrestlers of the Tournament along with being Temecula's 3rd champion

Poway Head Coach John Meyers on his teams performance: "As a team I was happy the way we performed tonight, when you have a lead in your match, you need to be ready and prepared for the tournaments. " "There are bouts that we dropped and need to go over some things in practice for us to improve." " I was pleased that we had 13 wrestlers in the semi finals along with 8 guys in the championships we scored more points in the consolation round which helps us a lot in the consolations." "Noah Tolentino my 145 pounder wrestled an excellent tournament along with teammate Brock Bobzien default win over Clovis' Darin Lemus at 132 pounds of the Finals we had a kid Adam Farha at 220 pounds recorded 4 pins." "Elias Navida and is getting better starting to improve on his skills and teammate Mikey Lytle is starting to take charge of the tournament. To reach your goal I talk to the kids in order to get to finals, if you don't make it to the championship round you have to score points in the consolation round and in the last 2 tounaments in Reno and Buchanan we scored our points and won those two contests."
