Here are the top four stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Pure Water Oceanside became the first operating potable reuse project in San Diego County when it went online in January 2022. The project was made possible through a series of local, state, and national funding. The Secretary of the Interior is recommending a $9.9 million grant award for construction of the Pure Water Oceanside project. The funding will be awarded via the Bureau of Reclamation's WaterSMART: Title XVI WIIN Water Reclamation and Reuse Projects funding opportunity. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. September 1 is the deadline for Vietnam veterans to apply for San Diego Honor Flight's November trip to Washington, D.C. The group will take Vietnam veterans to the nation's capital for the first time Sept. 30-Oct. 2 after escorting nearly 1,500 World War II and Korean War veterans since 2010. The September flight is reserved for Navy HA(L)-3 Seawolves veterans. The Seawolves provided air support to Navy SEALs, Swift Boat crews and Patrol Boats on the Mekong River and in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. The November flight, called an Award flight, is open to Vietnam veterans who earned a Purple Heart or a higher personal award for their military actions. To apply, visit this page. (Patch)
  3. The national average price of a gallon of regular gas dropped for the 70th consecutive day, decreasing nine-tenths of a cent to $3.892. It has dropped $1.124 since rising to a record $5.016 on June 14, including three-tenths of a cent Monday. This 70-day streak of falling prices at the pump is the second longest on record going back to 2005, Bespoke Investment Group noted in a report titled "The Great American Summer of Falling Gas Prices." In Oceanside, the price of gas has fallen as low as $4.85 a gallon according to GasBuddy. (Patch)
  4. An American Airlines flight from Seattle to San Diego had to make an emergency landing and was forced to return to an airport in Seattle shortly after departure Tuesday when an engine cover detached, according to media reports. The cover of an engine can be seen flying off the plane on video posted on social media by passengers on the plane, NBC is reporting. Passengers can be heard saying, "We survived," as the plane lands in Seattle. Alaska Airline says Flight 558 reported an "unusual vibration" on the left side of the plane shortly after departure in a statement sent to NBC News. (Patch)
