Record-Breaking Heat Hits Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, CA – They say records are meant to be broken, and that's exactly what happened Tuesday as a heat wave continued to scorch San Diego County and smashed previous record high temperatures.

The heat wave delivered record maximum temperatures across the region, including 98 degrees at Oceanside Harbor, breaking the previous high of 87, which was set in 1965, according to the National Weather Service.

Elsewhere around the region, it was 107 degrees in Vista, breaking 1965's record of 96, according to the National Weather Service. It was 105 in El Cajon, easily exceeding 2007's record of 98 degrees.

Other record-breaking temperatures included 100 degrees in Ramona (96, 2007); 99 in Alpine (98, 1968); 99 in Chula Vista (91, 1999); and 97 in San Diego (94, 1965).

The nation's highest temperature was at MCAS Miramar, which reached 108 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

A red flag warning is in effect for the inland valleys and mountain areas until 6 p.m. Wednesday. A gradual cooldown, weakening winds and a slow return of higher humidity levels will begin Wednesday, according to meteorologists.
