San Diego County Sheriff's Department: Death Investigation - Vista Detention Facility - Update

DECEASED:  John Edward Wright, 63-years-old

The Medical Examiner's Office conducted the autopsy today of John Wright. Wright had no trauma to his body which could have caused his death. The cause and manner of death are pending laboratory results and further evaluation.

On September 16, 2021, at about 3:00 p.m., deputies at the Vista Detention Facility found a sixty-three-year-old inmate, John Edward Wright, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed lifesaving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. Unfortunately, Wright was pronounced deceased at the facility.

Wright was booked into custody by the San Diego Police Department on March 4, 2021, for the charges of:

3056 PC – Violation of Parole
1203.2(a) PC – Probation Violation
455 PC – Attempt / Aid in Arson

The Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death. Wright was in a cell when he fell to the ground and was unresponsive. No evidence of foul play was discovered. Wright's family was notified of his death.
