- The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosted a recent Emerging Issues Forum that featured John Dobken, the Public Information Officer for SONGS, providing an update on the decommissioning of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Officials have publicly identified a motorcyclist who died in a crash in North County last week. Anthony Louis Avila, 63, of Oceanside died at 4 p.m. Thursday after his motorcycle collided with an SUV in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Avila was traveling southbound in the No. 2 lane of Highway 101 when he made a left turn into the No. 1 lane to pass a vehicle in front of him. (Fox 5 San Diego)
- The San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced a strategy Monday to prevent the homeless from being involved with crime, following the release of data showing homeless people in the county were more likely to be both crime victims and perpetrators. The DA's office says that, based on two years of county data compiled from November of 2019 until October of 2021, those experiencing homelessness have been involved with crime "at dramatically higher raters than the rest of the population," whether as victims or offenders. - Thousands of grocery workers across Southern California begin voting on whether to authorize their union to call a strike amid continued contract negotiations with the owners of stores including Ralphs and Vons/Pavilions/Albertsons. Roughly 47,000 workers represented by seven UFCW union locals between Central California and the Mexico border will be casting ballots. The membership covers workers at more than 500 stores. (Coast News)
- Like clockwork, a pod of false killer whales showed up off Dana Point on Sunday, March 20, the same day a year ago they also appeared off the local coastline. The most recent pod was previously spotted on Saturday, March 19, in Oceanside, first further offshore and on a second trip just outside of the harbor, where they were observed feeding on big fish. "They usually like to follow a path, the last couple times they went up the coastline," said Shane Hansen, general manager for Oceanside Whale Watching, which was first tipped off to the group's presence by Dominic Biagini, captain of Gone Whale Watching.
