Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Buccaneer Beach was one of several beaches closed Wednesday due to raw sewage spills. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality declared the beaches unsafe for water contact. The beach closures in Oceanside include all waterways north of Cassidy Street and south of Crosswaithe Street. The beaches will remain closed until sampling confirms they are safe for contact, according to a county news release. The county also issued an advisory for all coastal beaches, storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets. The recent rainfall can contribute to rising bacteria levels from urban runoff. "Residents should also avoid swimming, surfing and diving during rain and for 72 hours afterward." (Patch)
  2. Oceanside surfer Caitlin Simmers got her first major win at the Champion Tour's Meo Rip Curl Pro competition in Portugal this week. The 17-year-old surfing phenom is the first rookie to win an event on the Women's CT since Lakey Peterson (USA) at the 2012 Nike U.S. Open of Surfing. Simmers recently joined the World Tour after winning the U.S. Open of Surfing in 2021. She said the waves in Portugal reminded her of the beach break she grew up on in Oceanside. "This is my favorite kind of wave," she said. "This is what I surf everyday." (Surfer)
  3. Get ready to drink green beer and dance an Irish jig! Visit Oceanside has the scoop on all the St. Patrick's Day activities and celebrations around town tomorrow, including where to get the best corned beef while listening to live music and sipping some type of green beverage. Make a night of it and take advantage of discounts from one of the local hotels. You won't need the luck of the Irish to score a great time on St. Paddy's Day in Oceanside! (Visit Oceanside)
