Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The rain has stopped for now but the brutal storm that lashed our area brought flooding and high winds throughout Tuesday. Oceanside was spared the devastating damage that our neighbors to the north have endured but hazardous weather condition warnings are still in effect through today. The death toll from the recent storms now tops 14, including a 5-year-old boy who was swept away by flood waters. While we get a break for a few days, the rain is expected to return this weekend. (Patch)
  2. A local sheriff's deputy pleaded not guilty on Tuesday for allegedly stealing drugs from county drop-off locations. According to prosecutors, Cory Dean Richey "fished drugs out of prescription drug collections boxes, which are located at law enforcement facilities and jails across the county." To make matters worse, the prosecutor informed the judge at the arraignment that "There is the potential that he was selling." Richey was suspended without pay while awaiting trial and was being held on bail but the judge agreed to release him to a drug treatment facility. (Patch)
  3. Oceanside is one of 10 cities in San Diego County asking the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) for a more equal vote. The current weighted vote system gives the City of San Diego the majority of the voting power, with 57% of the board's vote. In a letter to SANDAG, the smaller cities claim that "The implementation of the weighted vote system has eliminated input from small and mid-sized cities while reducing board collaboration and public trust in the SANDAG Agency."
