Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Practice your jig, don your green and let this year's St. Patrick's Day celebrations begin!
For 2022, the day falls on Thursday, March 17, and events are planned throughout the month throughout communities in the San Diego area. Peruse Patch's annual St. Paddy guide to find the S.D. parade, festivities, green beer, corned beef and cabbage dining specials, Irish concerts, Irish dance, comedy nights and races/runs near you. (San Diego Patch)
  2. The Oceanside Planning Commission approved a conditional-use permit this week that will allow a cleaning supplies company to store up to 20,000 gallons of corrosive liquids, despite opposition from nearby residents. ChemStation Pacific LLC plans to open the new business in a vacant building in an industrial park on North Avenue, near the intersection of Oceanside Boulevard and North Melrose Drive. The company sells custom-mixed, biodegradable detergents and sanitizers delivered in refillable containers for breweries, restaurants and other food and beverage businesses. "All of our products are water-based," said business owner Dario Paduano at Monday's Planning Commission meeting. (San Diego Union Tribune)
  3. A woman was killed and two others were hurt Tuesday in a head-on car crash in Valley Center, according to authorities. California Highway Patrol said the two-vehicle collision happened around 5:50 p.m. on Lilac Road, located west of Via Piedra. A 62-year-old man driving a grey Lexus ES 350 was in the eastbound lane of Lilac Road when for unknown reasons he veered into the westbound lane, crashing into a black Chevrolet Bolt that was occupied by a 73-year-old man and 76-year-old female passenger (FOX 5 San Diego)
  4. From gas siphoning in local neighborhoods to breaking fuel pumps, thieves are targeting drivers and gas stations all over the Golden State amid a historic gas price surge, according to multiple reports. As gas prices continue to creep up in San Diego, the Automobile Club of Southern California is warning residents about a potential rise in fuel theft. Californians who own older cars should be especially vigilant of thieves who siphon gas, the act of sucking gas from a vehicle's tank through a tube. While newer cars have an anti-rollover valve that prevents thieves from siphoning gas, bandits are skipping that method and drilling right into the tank itself. (San Diego Patch)
  5. San Diego's first guaranteed income pilot program launched on Tuesday with 150 households across the county receiving their first monthly installment of $500. They will get the payment each month for the next two years. "I am super excited to see families actually get the money that they've been waiting for and us to be able to support them in this way," said Khea Pollard, who leads a program called San Diego for Every Child.
