Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Voting has begun and ballots have been sent to registered voters across San Diego County for the Nov. 8 General Election, the San Diego Registrar of Voters announced. Mail ballots were sent to 1.9 million registered voters in the county, according to the Registrar of Voters. Ballots can be returned through the mail or dropped off at any of the Registrar of Voters' official ballot drop box locations through Election Day. No postage is necessary, but voters need to sign and date the return ballot envelope. Voters who return their ballot through the U.S. Postal Service can track it by signing up for "Where's My Ballot?" Starting Saturday, Oct. 29, 39 vote centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Then starting Saturday, Nov. 5, more than 200 vote centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. All vote center locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 8. (Patch)
  2. County officials voted to take steps to address the growing fentanyl problem. "The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a proposal to require fentanyl awareness education in the county's classrooms as well as distribute naloxone to parents and students and train them on how to use the medication. The proposal, sponsored by Supervisors Jim Desmond and Terra Lawson- Remer and District Attorney Summer Stephan, also seeks funding to support on-campus drug and alcohol awareness programs. Accidental death caused by fentanyl is the leading killer of people between the ages of 18 and 45, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, far exceeding the number of deaths caused by car accidents, COVID-19, heart disease and gun violence within that age group." (Patch)
  3. The closure of train service between Oceanside and south Orange County is likely to last a month or more. "Amtrak's track closure between Irvine and Oceanside will disrupt Pacific Surfliner train travel for at least another month. Crews are making emergency repairs to stabilize the hillside next to railroad tracks in San Clemente, according to Amtrak, which estimates that a section of railroad track will be closed until mid- to late-November. The Pacific Surfliner temporarily stopped passenger train service south of Irvine on Sept. 30, due to the need for emergency repairs." (Noozhawk)
  4. Oceanside ranked 66th out of 175 cities on the list of "Safest Cities in America." "The personal finance company WalletHub compiled a list of the 'Safest Cities in America' based on 42 safety metrics, and cities from the Golden State performed poorly. The study evaluated the factors and compiled them into three categories, home and community safety, natural disaster risk and financial safety, resulting in a 100-point graded scale. Some metrics included the percentage of residents vaccinated against COVID-19, unemployment rates and the number of murders that occurred in the city during the study period. The highest-ranked California city was Fremont, which earned the 17th spot. Fremont, located in Alameda County in Northern California, earned an overall safety score of 79.98 out of 100."
