Today's riddle: What do you call a one-legged Big Foot? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Ojai considers tax on second homes to aid affordable housing (sanluisobispo.com) — Ojai's City Council is exploring a new tax on second homes as a way to raise money for affordable and workforce housing, but members are still wrestling with legal questions and fairness concerns. Officials discussed how to identify second homes, possible enforcement challenges, and alternative tools like a document transfer tax, with more staff research requested before any decision.
2. 'Musk,' 'You Can See Everything,' and More to Screen at Inaugural Ojai Documentary Film Festival (indiewire.com) — Ojai residents will soon get a brand-new documentary film festival right in town, running October 26–30 at the historic Ojai Playhouse. Expect big-name titles, filmmaker Q&As, legal and financial panels, and special screenings, plus a strong educational component inviting Ojai Valley high school students to experience documentary filmmaking up close.
3. Navy military device washed up on California beach and taken to home (amedpost.com) — A hazardous Navy phosphorus marine marker that can burn at 3,000 degrees was unknowingly brought from a Ventura County beach to a home in Ojai, prompting a response from the sheriff's bomb squad and Navy experts. Authorities are urging Ojai-area beachgoers to leave any suspicious military-looking objects where they are, evacuate the area, and immediately call 911 instead of moving them.
4. Local performers to pay musical tribute to Dolly Parton (ojaivalleynews.com) — Ojai music lovers can catch a live Dolly Parton tribute at the Ojai Art Center on Thursday, Oct. 8, with local singers and musicians performing her classics. Tickets cost $40 in advance, with part of each sale supporting Parton's Imagination Library, and a second performance follows in Ventura the same weekend.
5. SBART Luncheon: Fiona Pan Earns Cate Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award (noozhawk.com) — Local cross country runners from several Channel League schools will converge at Lake Casitas in Ojai for their league prelim meet this Saturday, marking the real start of their season. The luncheon also spotlighted Cate's standout three-sport athlete Fiona Pan and provided quick updates on football, flag football, golf, and other fall sports across the region.
