SANTA ANA, CA — A three-car crash in Santa Ana left a person dead and three other people injured — one critically — police said Wednesday.

The crash was reported at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of South Bristol Street, the Santa Ana Police Department said in a statement. According to authorities, the crash involved two SUVs and a sedan.

"Orange County Fire Authority (personnel) ... responded to the scene, declaring the passenger in the sedan deceased," police said in a statement Wednesday.

"The driver of the sedan was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition," police said. "Occupants from the two SUVs were also transported to area hospitals and treated for minor injuries.

"Based upon the preliminary investigation, it is believed the sedan was traveling north on Bristol Street, making a left turn onto westbound Tolliver Street, as the two SUVs were traveling south on Bristol Street behind one another," police said. "As the sedan made the left turn, the first SUV collided with the sedan, causing the second SUV to collide with the lead SUV."
