Alcohol-Fueled Crash Kills Mother, Injures 2 Children And Man: Police

An 18-year-old man was arrested after the crash left three people hospitalized and one person dead in Orange, police say.

ORANGE, CA — An 18-year-old man was in custody Monday on suspicion of triggering an alleged drunk-driving crash that killed a mother and seriously injured her daughter and two others, police said Monday.

Roberto Noe Monfil-Xitlama of Orange was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to the Orange Police Department.

The crash was reported at 8 p.m. Sunday at Tustin Street and Collins Avenue, police said.

According to investigators, Monfil-Xitlama was driving a Chevy Equinox heading south on Tustin when he crashed into a westbound Toyota RAV4 on Collins.

The suspect flashed through a red light, police said.

The crash killed one woman, who was identified as 40-year-old Maria Minerva Arroyo-Lozada of Orange. Her daughter was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but she was upgraded to serious Monday morning, police said.

Two other people were hospitalized as a result of the crash. One was identified as a 13-year-old girl who was riding in the Toyota, and the second was identified as Arroyo-Lozada's boyfriend, who was also hospitalized in serious condition, police said.

The suspect's blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit, police alleged.
