ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Orange County Health Care Agency officials Monday reported a local toddler has been afflicted with measles.
The news comes as measles cases see a spike across the nation.
The Health Care Agency reported that the toddler had a history of international travel. Last month, a child, who had been living abroad but now resides in Orange County, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport with measles.

"Measles is highly contagious," Dr. Anissa Davis, deputy county health officer, said in a statement. "Anyone planning domestic or international travel -- or hosting visitors -- should be fully vaccinated at least two weeks beforehand. Everyone 12 months and older should receive two does of MMR vaccine before travel, scheduled at least 28 days apart, before departure. Infants six to 11 months old who are traveling internationally should receive one dose of MMR vaccine. Adults and others who are not immune remain at risk, especially as outbreaks continue across the country and worldwide."
The country has confirmed 2,371 cases of measles this year, making it the highest number since measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000. Last year, there were 2,289 cases.
The most common symptoms for measles include fever, coughing, red and watery eyes as well as a rash that usually started on the head and spread to the body. Measles spreads through the air and by direct touch with an infected person. An infection can be contagious for about four days before a rash shows and four days after the rash vanishes.
Anyone who suspects an infection should call their doctor right away.
"Vaccination is the best protection," Davis said.
