Frat Where Student, 18, Went Before Death Was Ousted For Alleged Hazing: Report

FULLERTON, CA — The Cal State Fullerton fraternity where a freshman student attended an event before he died over the weekend lost university recognition in 2021 after allegations of hazing and other violations, The Orange County Register reported.

Fullerton police officers were dispatched to the scene at St. Jude's Medical Center early Sunday morning after receiving reports of a young man who had been dropped off at the hospital's emergency center.

According to police, medical staff tried to save the young man, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The young man was identified as 18-year-old Anthony Joseph Blas.

According to the Fullerton Police Department, Blas had been attending a party hosted by the unaffiliated fraternity, and alcohol was a factor in his death.

Prior to that, Blas attended a "large gathering" in the area of Associated Road and Milton Avenue, police said.

While the name of the organization was not given, The Orange County Register reported that the Delta Chi frat house is at that intersection.

According to the newspaper, a police calls-for-service log shows officers responded to the 2100 block of Teri Place, the alley behind the two-story house, for an investigation about 20 minutes after they responded to the hospital where Blas was dropped off.

In a statement to CBS LA, Blas's family also said his death followed "events connected to the Delta Chi fraternity near Cal State Fullerton."

The Delta Chi Fraternity was permanently ousted from CSUF and lost its recognized student organization status, according to the university's Student Organization Status Key.

Delta Chi's alleged violations include the following, per the university's website:

• Actions that endanger the health of safety of anyone in the campus community such as physical abuse, threats, sexual misconduct, harassment or intimidation.
• Hazing or conspiracy to haze.
• Using, possessing, manufacturing or distributing illegal drugs and alcoholic beverages.
• Violating any federal, state or local law that poses a substantial threat to the health and well-being of the campus community.
• Breaking any CSUF rule, policy, regulation or presidential order.
• Falsifying, distorting or misrepresenting information in a student discipline case.
• Trying to include anyone in a student discipline case.
• Encouraging, helping or allowing someone to break a rule or policy leading to discipline.

Blas had just recently begun his first year of college, The California Post reported, after graduating from Los Altos High School with an impressive list of college acceptances.

According to The Post, Blas had been accepted to Cal Poly Pomona, Sacramento State, University of Pittsburgh, University of Arizona, Michigan State, University of Oregon, Northern Arizona State, Oregon State, Arizona State, University of Nevada: Reno, University of Nevada: Las Vegas, Whittier College, Cal Lutheran, La Verne, Utah State, Utah Tech and University of Utah.
