SANTA ANA, CA — A woman was rescued Monday from above the 55 Freeway in an hourslong operation as she threatened to jump, according to police.
Officers responded around 3 p.m. to a report of a woman standing on the freeway overpass near 17th Street, police said. The woman was shirtless and standing on a sign platform in footage obtained by KTLA.
After about 2 hours and 30 minutes of negotiations, crisis negotiators convinced her to surrender and she was brought to safety and taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to police.
California Highway Patrol announced around 3:40 p.m. that all lanes of the northbound freeway south of 17th Street would be closed. Just over an hour later, they extended the closures to include three lanes of the southbound freeway north of 17th Street.
All lanes had reopened as of 6 p.m., according to the highway patrol, but drivers were asked to continue using alternate routes.
