Bake a Wish Fellowship Project Hosted First-Ever Cake Camp in San Clemente for Underserved Kids

On June 20, Bake a Wish, a youth-led nonprofit that delivers “make-it-yourself” birthday cake boxes to families in crisis, hosted its inaugural “Cake Camp” at the Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) facility in San Clemente, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping families facing food insecurity, housing instability, and hardship.

This joyful event, designed to empower children through the art of baking and decorating, was made possible by the nonprofit Dragon Kim Foundation - http://dragonkimfoundation.org – whose mission is to inspire our youth to impact their communities while discovering and pursuing their passions.

Founded by JSerra Catholic High School student and Dragon Kim Foundation Fellow Alexandra Marsh, a member of Foundation's DKF-9 Fellowship program, Bake a Wish aimed to celebrate every child—no matter their circumstances—with the simple joy of cake. Camp participants took part in a hands-on decorating workshop, took home their own cakes, and enjoyed a day filled with laughter, frosting, and fun.

“With Cake Camp, we’re bringing the joy and creativity of baking directly to the children we serve,” said Marsh. “It’s more than cake—it’s about dignity, celebration, and community. Bake a Wish is more than a project to me — it’s a way to spread joy, dignity, and celebration to kids who deserve to feel special on their birthdays. It reminds me how small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact.”

The Dragon Kim Foundation, which empowers high school students across the Western U.S. to launch impactful community service projects,underwrote the event. Marsh’s selection as a DKF Fellow provided her with funding, mentorship, and leadership training to expand her mission.

Marsh says, "Being a DKF Fellow has been incredibly meaningful to me. It has not only helped me grow Bake a Wish, but it has also pushed me to grow as a leader. This experience has challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, think more strategically, and take initiative in ways I hadn’t before.”

In 2025, the Foundation is supporting 61 community service projects created and implemented by132 motivated teens in California, Arizona, and Nevada. To prepare, they receive mentorship, training, and resources, including a grant of up to $5,000 to activate their social entrepreneurial programs in their respective communities.

The Fellowship was founded in 2015 in honor of the late Dragon Kim, a talented young musician, athlete, and scholar who wanted to help others. It has become a seedbed for the next generation of creative thinkers and entrepreneurs who want to create positive change.
