Fireworks Likely Cause In House Fires In Fullerton, Santa Ana

Two blazes were reported to the authorities July 4, and Orange County authorities believe fireworks may be the cause.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Fireworks commemorating July 4 may have been the cause behind house fires that damaged homes in Fullerton and Santa Ana, the OC Register reported.

A blaze was reported in Santa Ana just before 1 a.m. on Monday, when a caller reported a house fire on the 1100 block of South Flower Street. Investigators knocked down the fire, which charred an exterior shed and a large cactus, and determined a firework had sparked flames.

A second blaze was reported in Fullerton when residents reported fireworks had launched shortly before a fire chewed through a garage on the 1000 block of La Mesa Drive, according to the report.

Neighbors tried to quell the flames with garden hoses will awaiting firefighter response. No injuries were reported from either of the fires.

In Orange County, only ten cities are permitted to use "safe and sane" fireworks. The cities include: Anaheim, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Stanton, Villa Park and Westminster. Fireworks that explode, fly into the air or move on the ground are not legal.
