Future Programmers; Hour Of Code Is Serious Fun In Yorba Linda
Friends Middle School of Yorba Linda celebrates learning to code by teaching kids to program from scratch.
YORBA LINDA, CA — To spark knowledge of and develop an interest in computer science, Friends Christian Middle School (FCMS) students joined the annual Hour of Code event, introducing students to the world of computer science. This event at FCMS was unique because each and every student (Grades 5-8) was given the opportunity to participate throughout the day.
“As our world becomes increasingly digital, it's imperative that students are equipped to make a positive impact. Learning to code not only makes them competitive, but also puts them at the ground level in influencing culture. By involving the whole school, many students' preconceived ideas and
stereotypes of coding were dispelled. Our hope is that some students are now considering a career in computer science for the first time,” said Emily Omondi, FCMS Computer Teacher/Digital Learning Coach.
The Hour of Code is a nationwide effort led by Code.Org to provide an opportunity for students to get a first-hand look at computer science in a fun and engaging way. The goal of hosting the Hour of Code at FCMS was to expose students to what coding is; to show how crucial knowledge of coding is
in todays’ world and to encourage students to keep learning.

The leadership team at FCMS hopes this and other opportunities in its current curriculum will help continue to spark interest in this digital space and even to potentially consider pursuing STEM careers in the future; where there is a great need for these skills.
“I'm so thankful that our students had the opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code. As a staff we are always looking at ways to make learning meaningful for our students and help them make real world connections. Mrs. Omondi has been instrumental in keeping our students on the cutting edge of technology and
teaching them about computer literacy,” shared FCMS Principal Joy Swift.

Before the event, students viewed an inspiring video where notable powerhouses in the technology, sports and music industries shared why they learned to code and how it’s impacted their success today. Students were inspired to see that CEOs, Athletes, Managers, Musicians, Engineers, and other occupations all benefit from knowledge of coding. Most even shared that they too learned to code at the middle school level.

“The Hour of Code was a very exciting and fun experience. I really enjoyed learning the basics of coding. Now I want to go to college to pursue a degree in computer science!” shared Aiden Perry, and 8 th grader at FCMS.
Friends Christian Middle School offers two elective courses that allow students to dig deeper into computer science. The App Developer course teaches students how to write codeto program an app using Swift Playgrounds.

The Web and Media Literacy course evaluates media messages and teaches students how to create media using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. In addition to both electives, fifth and sixth graders are also given opportunities to explore computer programming using Scratch.
