Inmate, 24, Dies In Police Custody: OCSD

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — A 24-year-old suspect charged with vehicle theft died in custody at the Theo Lacy Facility, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Edson Israel Rosasmendrano had been housed at the detention center since Sunday after being booked on Thursday by the Santa Ana Police Department on suspicion of vehicle theft, receiving a stolen vehicle, and obstructing or resisting a police office, authorities said.

Rosasmendrano was found unresponsive on Sunday, authorities said.

Deputies and medical staff responded and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead by Orange County Fire Authority personnel.

Following a preliminary investigation, detectives said no suspicious circumstances were identified.

The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy and toxicology examination are completed.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is expected to investigate the in-custody death along with the sheriff's department, officials said.
