Knife-wielding Suspect Shot In OC Charged With Attempted Murder
The knife-wielding suspect was attacking a Costa Mesa cashier when the shooting occurred, police say.
COSTA MESA, CA — A 28-year-old suspect shot by Costa Mesa police amid a violent robbery was charged with attempted murder Monday.
Gabriel Tamayopaniagua was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon and faces sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, the personal use of a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury on the victim, court records say.
Tamayopaniagua's Monday arraignment was rescheduled for April 7 in the West Justice Center in Westminster.

On Thursday, Costa Mesa police responded to a call of a fight at a business in the 2200 block of Fairview Road about 4:45 a.m., police say. When the officers arrived a robbery was in process, they said.
Police found the knife-wielding suspect as he attacked a cashier, and the shooting occurred, police said.

Both the victim and Tamayopaniagua were taken to hospitals to be treated for their injuries, police said.
The victim's wounds were not considered life- threatening.
